When I started running again about a year ago one of my staples was a lap around the block near my apartment: http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=148092. My block size has increased: this morning I ran a bit further but still consider it just a "short" lap around a block: http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=179808. I don't recall the time anymore but I did take a brief break along Shoreline on the 101 overpass (at about 2.5 miles in, at 20:00). I went for this run before having eaten breakfast, and dinner the previous night wasn't especially carb-loading, so I felt somewhat out of energy. This would be a pretty nice loop running backward (out on Middlefield, up Shoreline, etc.), because then I could stop at Google at the 3 mile mark, lift weights, then finish off with a one-mile cool-down trot. Maybe in the coming weeks I'll try that.
