Melinda and I were on the lookout for nenes but never saw any. We asked around and learned that it had been a hard summer for them, with little water. Better bet for seeing nenes was going to another island. 8/ We did see several other species. The cattle egrets had no fear of cars while they walked or stood in the grass along the sides of busy highways. A myna bird woke us up at dawn Friday morning with a squawk on our lanai, then flew off. Chukars are strangely plump and checked out our tour bus at Haleakala crater. And we saw zebra doves around the island as well. But no nenes.
