We have two bags to check, each right at that 15kg baggage limit for the last leg of the flying journey (we can check more from SFO to Buenos Aires but between BA and Ushuaia we're limited to less). I'm sure we've overpacked for the cold weather but probably by not too much, and besides, when else will we have a decent excuse to wear four layers of clothing? Oh, right, MIT Mystery Hunt in January. (Which we're missing - here's to hoping that we can play in Code Yellow's partial rerun.)
Right -- two bags packed, and a new backpack as well with optics. It's heavier than I'd like, and the bag doesn't have all the pockets I'd really like. But that'll be fine. When we're on the ship we can unpack (in fact, we'll be obliged to, as they're going to toss all the luggage in the hold, just to get it out of our way). So it's just for transit. On the plus side, our only carry-on bags are the backpacks, so we'll be relatively light.
I don't know if we'll have easy Internet access onboard the vessel, so either my next post will be in a few days from South America (or perhaps I'll just plus-post), or, you'll hear nothing until I'm back in January. We'll see.
You can follow our boat, the M/V Ortelius, using http://bit.ly/rY0pAA. And, as of right now, it's in port at Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, just as I would expect. Excellent.
