I heard this motto at work: "but I had fun writing mine!" I think it very tightly summarizes many software engineers: they see a problem, they write some code to fix it, and then someone points out how that code already exists somewhere and their work is for not. It's not altogether a bad thing -- after all, fun was had while writing it. 8) And, I'd rather work with engineers who know how to fix a problem, rather than just complain about it, even if it means reinventing the wheel.
